Our Vision

Visitors often ask why we have geese for our school logo.

We chose geese because of the way that they work together: when they are flying, when they are tired or injured, when they honk to encourage each other!

Sense of community

At Alexandra School we have a strong sense of community: we know that we can learn and achieve much more together than we can apart.

The geese have meaning for us and for the pupils here, as do our five Alexandra School values which underpin everything that we do:

  • Take care of others
  • Accept and give respect
  • Believe in the possibility and power of change
  • Take personal responsibility for your actions
  • Never tire of doing good

We strive to provide excellent teaching and learning support with all the necessary facilities and resources to ensure that pupils have the best possible chance of success in their school career.

Pupils at Alexandra have opportunities to gain skills and knowledge across the curriculum, to develop self confidence and respect for others, to become independent at school and in the wider world.

Everyone goes above and beyond –
to make it such a great place to be

Lessons from geese

People often ask why we have geese for our school logo!

It wasn’t always so — for many years our logo was a book.

Then, on a staff training day, we watched a video called
“Lessons from Geese”.

The lessons seemed so appropriate for Alexandra that we decided to adopt the goose as our mascot.

Lessons from geese – fact 1:

As each goose flaps its wings, it creates an “uplift” for the birds that follow.

By flying in a “V” formation, the whole flock adds 71% greater flying range than if each bird flew alone.

Lesson from fact 1:

People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going quicker and easier – because they are travelling on the thrust of one another.

Lessons from geese – fact 2:

When a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of flying alone.

It quickly moves back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird immediately in front of it.

Lesson from fact 2:

If we have as much sense as a goose, we stay in formation with those headed where we want to go.

We are willing to accept their help and give our help to others.

Lessons from geese – fact 3

When the lead goose tires, it rotates back into the formation, and another goose flies to the point position.

Lesson from fact 3:

It pays to take turns doing the hard tasks and sharing leadership.

As with geese, people are interdependent on each other’s skills, capabilities and unique arrangements of gifts, talents or resources.

Lessons from geese – fact 4:

When a goose gets sick, wounded or shot down, two geese drop out of formation and follow it down to help and protect it.

Lesson from fact 4:

If we have as much sense as a goose, we stay in formation with those headed where we want to go.

We are willing to accept their help and give our help to others.

Lessons from geese – fact 5:

The geese flying in formation honk to encourage those up front to keep up their speed.

Lesson from fact 5:

We need to make sure our honking is encouraging.

In groups where there is encouragement, the production is much greater.

The power of encouragement is the quality of honking we seek.
