Admissions

When considering applying for place at Alexandra School, it is natural to have lots of questions. Please see below for answers to some of the questions you may have.

I am interested in finding out if Alexandra School could be the right school for my child.

How can I find out more?

Contact the school on 0208 864 2739 to arrange to visit the school. On an average week we run at least two tours of the school, led by members of the school leadership team. You are welcome to bring a member of staff from your child’s current school, and / or someone to translate for you, if either would be helpful. We aim to make these tours as bespoke as possible, for individual families, so that you can ask any questions you might have.

To find out more about the school before you visit, please take a look around the rest of this website, particularly at the Our School and How We Learn sections. You can also read our Statement of Provision and SEN Information Report, available here.

I have been told to consider Alexandra School, by my child’s current school and / or by other professionals, but I am not comfortable with this.

What should I do?

Come and visit us anyway, as described above. Attending an Alexandra School tour does not commit you to wanting a place here. Seeing the school can help families to identify what kind of school might suit their child. You can then discuss what you’ve seen with your child’s casework officer and identify other schools to consider if appropriate.

I have visited the school and I am now interested in a place for my child.

What happens next?

Let your child’s casework officer know that you are interested in a place here. If the local authority agrees to consult with the school, we will be sent a copy of your child’s EHCP and all related paperwork. Wherever possible, we will arrange to see your child, either in their current school or by inviting them to visit an Alexandra class. We will consider if we can meet your child’s needs at Alexandra and if they are going to fit in well with the other children at Alexandra. This is really important to give your child the best chance of success.

My child’s paperwork has been sent to Alexandra School to be considered.

When will I hear if my child can have a place?

Once we have decided whether or not we can meet your child’s needs at Alexandra, we will inform the local authority.

If we cannot meet your child’s needs, we will write a letter explaining why our provision is not right for them. This will help you and your child’s casework officer to identify other schools to consider.

If we can meet your child’s needs, we will let your child’s casework officer know when a place will be available.

We receive most of our consultations in the autumn and spring terms, for places the following September. The earlier we receive your child’s consultation, the better the chance that we will have a place available for them the following year. Places for September are usually confirmed by the start of the summer term. It is rare that we have spaces for pupils to start within a school year.

My child has been offered a place, but I would like them to remain in mainstream longer.

Can I defer for a year or so?

If we offer a place to your child, it means that we feel we can support them to make their best progress here, both educationally and socially. However, if you do not want to take up the offer of a place here, then that is of course your choice. We cannot hold a place for your child, but the local authority could consult again at a later date. It would be important for you to know that the majority of our pupils join us in EYFS and Key Stage One, which means that it is harder to get places in the older years at Alexandra School.

My child will be starting at Alexandra School in September.

How will my child be supported with the change of schools?

By the start of the summer term, we send out a letter to all confirmed new pupils, setting out the transition arrangements.

During the summer term, we carry out home visits to meet all new families. We also invite parents / carers into school to complete admission forms and find out about uniform.

Pupils who will be joining us for Reception or Year 1 will be invited to some stay and play sessions in June.

Pupils who will be joining us for Year 2 to Year 6 will be invited to attend a New Pupil Day, usually on the first Wednesday in July. On this day we arrange the school into the new September classes, so that our new pupils can visit the right classroom and spend time with the children and staff they will be learning alongside in September.

All new children, from Reception to Year 6, will receive a transition booklet and photo chart of their new class. All families will receive a parent/carer information pack.

The majority of our new children will start full-time, for full school days, from the beginning of the academic year. We may have a brief, staggered start for some of our youngest pupils, depending on need.
