Curriculum
The curriculum at Alexandra School is designed with our school value of, ‘Believe in the possibility and the power of change’ at its heart.
Core skills & life skills
- We focus on the individual learning needs of each pupil in order for them to make the best progress they can
- Class sizes are small, between 8-12 children in order for staff to personalise learning and promote independence
- Each class is taught by a teacher and one or more Teaching Assistants
Adapted curriculum
Our curriculum is based on the National Curriculum. It has been adapted so that pupils are taught the key content, in a creative, cross-curricular way. The curriculum is divided into themes; each subject is taught discretely within a curriculum themed area.
We allow pupils to spend longer on units of work and to work at a level appropriate to their ability rather than simply their age.
Teaching and learning opportunities are planned for pupils to develop and refine their core skills in English and maths.
Pupils take part in daily lessons in which they work toward meeting individual targets that are regularly reviewed.
Life skills
The school places an equal importance on allowing pupils to develop life skills which support their independence in the community and prepare them for their life after school.
Life skills are taught across all subject areas, giving pupils an opportunity to consolidate these skills and apply them to different contexts.

Developing learning
Staff are passionate about ensuring pupils have opportunities to develop their learning in real and relevant contexts. This is achieved through regular educational visits in the local area and beyond.
The school works hard to prepare pupils for these experiences in order to ensure their success.
Each year, we have a whole school outdoor and adventurous week during which pupils from Reception to Year 5 take part in outdoor activities and have the opportunity to camp overnight. Pupils in Year 6 are offered a week-long residential trip in their final term of Key Stage 2.
